Education is provided for our nursing staff through inservice and continuing education. Short-term study programs are provided for international nurses and nursing student affiliates at the undergraduate and graduate level.
Educational Environment
- On-the-job education can be informal -- Memorial Sloan-KetteringĀ provides an environment in which nurses can share findings, insights, experiences, and advice.
- Nurse Educators and Clinical Nurse Specialists provide formal education.
- Nurses are provided the resources to continue their education on the job and are encouraged to participate in professional conferences and other educational opportunities.
Nursing Orientation
- All new nursing employees participate in a two-day "New Employee Orientation" program. Memorial Sloan-Kettering's orientation process consists of activities designed to welcome new employees and ease their entry process.
- In the nursing orientation program, nurses acquire the competencies needed to care for persons with particular types of cancer.
- The format of the program includes: classroom discussion and practice, supervised patient care assignments and self-directed learning.
- Ten class-days take place in the first 4 weeks of orientation. Some classes are specific to inpatient, ambulatory and perioperative nurses.
- Clinical orientation is based on individual experience and progress, and continues for up to three months.
- A preceptor is available throughout orientation to serve as a teacher and resource in a particular clinical area. The Nurse Leader, Nurse Educator and Clinical Nurse Specialist supervise clinical orientation collaboratively.
- All nurses attend the following programs:
- Medical Oncologic Emergencies (2 days)
- ONS Chemotherapy/Biotherapy (2 Days)
- BCLS
Professional Development
The Nurse Leaders/Managers collaborate with nurses to develop individualized developmental plans that may include:
- Memorial Sloan-Kettering Nursing Grand Rounds
- Continuing Education Programs
- Disease Management/Service Conferences
- Nurses may request meeting days and/or funds to attend educational programs or professional conferences outside Memorial Sloan-Kettering.
- Community-based Continuing Education Programs with meeting days provided.
